Sexy sequined dress meets disco ball, the Fun series of lamps are the brainchild of Verner Panton – the most influential Danish designer of the twentieth century. Panton’s radical, revolutionary products epitomised the sixties – this one is from 1964 – but they have never gone out of production and have recently enjoyed something of a revival, championed by the post-modernists.
The Verpan Fun 2DA light is a more compact version of the Fun 1DA. Constructed from the same top quality materials, it comprises two concentric chrome hoops supporting varying lengths of cascading metal discs which are joined with secure metal rings. It is entirely supported by a tasteful black fabric cord.
The Fun 2DA looks sensational switched off, but when it is turned on the warm bulb (which is completely hidden by the lamp) draws air through the draped lengths of metal discs, causing them to oscillate. The movement generates random pulses of light and a relaxing tinkling sound as the discs brush against one another.
Cheap imitations abound – avoid them. They employ Nylon wire to join plastic discs, hang poorly and require constant disentangling.
