A Spanish native, Urquiola graduated from Madrid Poly in 1980 with a distinction in architecture. She then steadily worked her way up to head of Product Development at Maddalena De Padova before gaining valuable experience with architects Renzio and Ramerino. It was, by her own admission, a slow start – but the momentum steadily built up and by 2003 Urquiola was Elle Deco’s International Designer of the Year. The awards have cascaded upon her ever since.
