Born in Cairo in 1960 to English and Egyptian parents, Rashid was raised and educated in Canada. He graduated with distinction in Industrial Design from Carleton University in Ottawa in 1982 and pursued post-graduate studies in Naples and Milan. Read more.
In 1993 Rashid moved to New York and opened his own practise. With over 3000 designs in production in 40 countries, he is easily the most prolific designer of his generation. He has worked producing luxury goods for the likes of Veuve Clicquot and Swarovski as well as more “democratic” ones for Umbra, Alessi and 3M – not to forget his high-tech creations for Asos and Samsung. Indeed, Rashid’s pluralism is matched only by his ambition: which is “to creatively touch every aspect of our physical and virtual landscape”.
Rashid is also a prolific writer of monographs. The one that perhaps best describes his attitude to design was published by Rizzotti in 2001. It was called I Want To Change The World.
Karim Rashid’s work can be seen in fourteen galleries worldwide, including Manhattan’s MoMA and the Pompidou in Paris. He has won many awards and is a frequent guest lecturer at a growing number of American and European universities. Close.
