Brothers Humberto and Fernando Campana – the former a lawyer and the latter an architect – have worked together since 1983. Campana Objetos, their office in San Paolo, has over the years garnered a formidable reputation for the design and manufacture of contemporary furniture. This was more of a political manifesto concerning itself with non-functional objects, but it was also a taste of what was to come.

The brothers’ iconic Blow up collection appeared some years later. Using recycled steel rods welded together, the Campanas created beautiful and functional domestic items that gave the impression of being caught mid-explosion. Italian manufacturers Alessi could not initially keep pace with demand and for some months there was a delay in international availability.

The recycled steel version was followed by the bamboo constructed version. Both utilise cheap but strong materials that are sustainably sourced.
